Low Carb Snacks

Jonesing for a chip fix? Want something crunchy and salty but don't want to cheat on a low carb diet? Here's a list of great low carb snacks that are satisfying without the carbs.

1.Pepperoni. Nuke pepperoni in the microwave for a minute or so and you'll have a spicy potato chip substitute.

2.Celery dipped in bleu cheese dressing with a dash of hot sauce is a great snack reminiscent of chicken wings. Actually, if you have time, get some chicken wings--they are usually fairly low carb.

3.Salami wrapped in cheese is yummy and filling.

4.Nuts, just a few though, because the calories do add up. Peanuts are not technically nuts, but so long as you don't overdo it, you can have a few on a low carb diet. Also look for flavored almonds in the grocery store as those are quite good.

5.Peanut butter and celery. Be sure to buy an all natural peanut butter that only lists peanuts and salt as the ingredients. Other types of peanut butter often have sugar.

6. String cheese is a good low carb snack.

7. Cottage cheese is also a low carb snack option.

8. Berries are naturally low carb and, while they aren't ideal for weight loss, a 1/2 a cup every once in a while won't derail a low carb diet. Look for cherries, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

9.Quesadilla with a low carb tortilla. Most grocery stores will have a reduced carb tortilla. Briefly fry the tortilla in oil before filling with cheese and grilling until the cheese is melted. (Pre-frying ensures the tortilla will be nice and crisp.) The website, Netrition also sells low carb tortillas if your local grocery store doesn't carry them.

10. Make an antipasto platter with cheese, meat, veggies, and olives.

11. Wasa cracker with a cheese spread such as Alouette's Garlic Herb spread. Wasa crackers are low carb, although daily consumption is not recommended if you are trying to lose weight, but one cracker a week or so should be fine.

What is your favorite low carb snack? What do you reach for when you're hungry?

Low Carb Sweets

Dessert is the first thing to go on a low carb diet, but believe it or not there are lots of low carb sweet treats that you can eat.

1.Chocolate Mousse made with dark chocolate and whipping cream.Melt chocolate in a double boiler. Beat the whipping cream until it is firm. Let chocolate cool briefly and then slowly drizzle into the cream. Fold gently with a spatula to blend ingredients. Refrigerate or freeze. if you freeze this, it makes a good stand in for chocolate ice cream. Try to keep servings to 1/2 cup to control the carb content.

2.Diet Root Beer with Cool Whip. Did you know that Cool Whip is naturally low carb? It is! And it works nicely with Diet Root Beer for a Root Beer float effect.

3.Diet jello can be bought premade or can be made at home.It is pretty tasty too!

4.Dark chocolate is naturally low carb. Lindt makes a wonderful dark chocolate truffle bar and dark chocolate truffles. Yum-o!

5.Learn to cook with almond flour and you can make cookies as well as cupcakes with almost no carbs. Even pancakes are possible. See links for a chocolate cake recipe. Note that almond flour has to be purchased online as most stores do not carry it.

6.Berries with cool whip are a nice low carb treat. Note that raspberries have the lowest carb content.

7.Sugar free jello brand pudding can also be found at most grocery stores.

8.Cheesecake can be made low carb by using Splenda. Splenda brown sugar blend is easy to bake with and most people can't taste anything different from regular sugar. Splenda is found in most retail outlets, but you can buy it cheaper, in bulk, online.

9.Breyer's makes a low carb ice cream called Carb Smart. The chocolate is the best flavor but the vanilla can be nicely dressed up by topping it with Smucker's reduced sugar or sugar free jams. We like to use strawberry.

10. Sugar free popsicles are a great summer treat and they taste great. They are good to keep on hand for those times when your sweet tooth is close to winning.
